Last Stand At Breck III

The Book of Omega #1

THE STORY

A ragtag team of space orphans accidentally makes themselves the last line of defense against a hostile intergalactic crime syndicate.

It’s a simple rule for survival: Stay out of the way. When Pan and his crew break their rule and rescue a moon mining colony from hostile takeover, they quickly find themselves as the only defense against an intergalactic crime syndicate called Rogue Worlds.

Now they’re outnumbered and outgunned – and not really sure why they’re still there.

Can they save everyone again? Or are they about to prove they were always right trying to stay out of the way?

Last Stand at Breck III is the first story in the Book of Omega middle grade space opera series. If you enjoyed Fart Quest and The Last Kids on Earth – and like Star Wars and Firefly – then this adventure is perfect for you or your young reader.

READ CHAPTER 1

This was supposed to be a smooth, easy job: Steal the relic and get out. Obviously, that’s not how it’s going, though, because that’s me running as fast as I can from those two museum guards.

Let me explain. I’m not the bad guy here. I swear. Yes, I’m stealing a relic from a museum, but you’re missing a lot of backstory there.

First off, hi. My name is Pan. Captain Pan.

Before you make fun of my name, you should know it’s a nickname. I’m good with a pan. When you take out an oversized Gordigon with a headshot by throwing a cast iron skillet like a frisbee, the name sticks. Especially when it’s better than your real name. I made sure Pan stuck.

You’re probably also saying I look a little young for a captain. That’s true. There aren’t too many thirteen-year-old captains. But life dealt me some lame cards and I’m just getting by. Plus, it’s not a big ship. Small ship and small crew. More on that later.

Back to me not being the bad guy. Yes, I’m stealing a relic from a museum, but this isn’t actually the museum’s relic. It was stolen and they accepted it.

Before you let them off the hook, you should know that Rangonia is a planet that likes to dabble in the black market. The evil network isn’t everywhere – there are plenty of good folk on this planet. But it’s a business-driven planet and letting the black market operate “under the radar” means more buyers. Black market buyers buy things from good people, too.

This museum is not good people, though. They just pretend to be so that good people come spend money here. The museum also provides cover for stolen goods. They get to display some of those stolen goods. They also get to move and help traffic stolen goods. For a price. And that price funds all their other fun.

Anyway, the original owners of the relic – those who the relic is actually important to for religious reasons – found out their stolen relic was here. They reached out to the museum leaders but never got a response. They put out a call for help. Me and my crew answered. So here we are.

We have the relic. It’s in my hand. Now we just have to get out of here without getting caught. Of course, our original plan was to get out of here unnoticed. Oh well.
